[Project Overview]
This project began with a long-held fascination with traditional mother-of-pearl cabinets. As an illustrator, I spent years researching how to integrate this beauty into my artwork, ultimately recreating the traditional nacre technique as a digital illustration.
This project began with a long-held fascination with traditional mother-of-pearl cabinets. As an illustrator, I spent years researching how to integrate this beauty into my artwork, ultimately recreating the traditional nacre technique as a digital illustration.
While traditional mother-of-pearl furniture is highly expensive and faces physical limitations in daily use, I envisioned a solution through digital printing. I applied my artwork to refrigerators, the most frequently used and central appliance in a household. By combining meaningful elements from Korean folk paintings (Minhwa), this project proposes an art collaboration that transforms an essential home appliance into a symbol of good fortune and family well-being.
I created mockups for three major appliance brands (LG, Samsung, SMEG) based on my own desire to own such a refrigerator.

Referencing lacquerware artifacts from museum collections, I reinterpreted the unique, iridescent colors of traditional Korean mother-of-pearl using modern digital techniques. I combined auspicious motifs from traditional Korean folk paintings (Minhwa) with cute cat characters.
-Plum Blossom : Overcoming the cold winter to be the first to bloom, it symbolizes indomitable will, unwavering integrity, and a new beginning (spring).
-Rock : Eternity and steadfastness that does not change despite wind and rain.
-Butterfly : Longevity, marital harmony, happiness, joy, and hope.
-Cat : Repelling bad energy. When with a butterfly, it symbolizes a wish for a long life.
-Fish : Carp means success in life (passing the gateway to success). Since fish keep their eyes open even when sleeping, they symbolize protection, keeping watch over precious things.
[Artist Note]
Minhwa (Korean traditional folk painting) is an artwork that contains earnest prayers.
It holds universal human desires: wishing for health, longevity, family harmony, marital bliss, having many children, enjoying wealth and honor, achieving success in one's studies, and wishing for peace and good fortune in everything.
I engraved my earnest wishes by drawing these meaningful elements one by one, hoping for the peace and well-being of those I love.
