Funeral

2018. Digital painting

A bier is a tool for moving a coffin from a funeral ceremony to a grave in Korea.
The bier is called 'Sang-yeo' or 'Kkotsang-yeo' in Korean.
The body placed in the coffin is placed on a bier, and several people carry the bier to the tomb.
At this time, the bier is decorated with pretty flowers and dolls.
That's why it's sometimes called a 'flower bier'.
It is to comfort the dead on their last way.
Dolls are said to be friends on the way to the dead.
When several people carry a bier and walk to the tomb, they sing to mourn the dead.
Sometimes, some people find it strange to see them singing.
This is because they sing for the dead without crying in sorrowfully.
This is not a song sung out of joy, but to mourn the last way of the dead.
The lyrics of the song are about wanting the dead to be comfortable.
It's a beautiful funeral procession that mourns the dead.
This is a beautiful funeral culture in Korea.
This is my favorite painting among the illustrations in this book.

This book is called "Cats' Journey to Chosun Dynasty" which I published.
It is an historical illustration book that shows the Chosun Dynasty with cute cats as the main characters.
The main characters in this book are actually real stray cats living in my neighborhood.
After published, I had two exhibitions named "The Nyang" with illustrations of this book.
